# Conversations and context

> Understand how LanternIQ conversations preserve context, background work, and review history.

LanternIQ conversations are durable workspaces. Messages, investigations, evidence, approvals, linked specialist runs, and initiative context remain available when you return.

## Conversation controls

Use Conversation history to reopen prior threads. You can also start a new conversation, archive the current thread, load earlier messages, or return to the originating product surface.

Leaving a conversation does not cancel background work.

## Product context

When LanternIQ opens from Analytics, Citations, Traffic, Search Console, Site Audit, Projects, or Home, the conversation can retain that surface as context. Remove a context chip when it is no longer relevant.

## Brand context

LanternIQ uses the active brand and your authorized access. It can incorporate approved Brand Kit information, connected integrations, knowledge sources, current initiatives, and approved strategic decisions.

## Conversation memory

Recent messages remain available verbatim. Older conversation content is summarized into bounded memory, and approved strategic decisions are retained separately.

Chat text is not automatically treated as an approved brand fact. Use Brand Kit or an approved strategic decision for information that must guide future work.

## Stop, retry, and background work

* Continue in background leaves the conversation while work continues.
* Stop run requests cancellation of the active LanternIQ run and keeps the conversation.
* Retry submits the latest user request as a new turn.
* Reconnect resumes live updates when the browser connection was interrupted.

Stopping a LanternIQ turn does not guarantee cancellation of a specialist that already started as separate work.
